I recently bought myself a new virtualization server. I decided to go for a supermicro “E200-8D” with 128GB worth of RDIMM’s.
After using it for a while, I thought it was too noisy to sit next to. The 2 front fans are 40mm fans that spin up to 13K rpm! Since I don’t have a server room and I want to run the server 24/7 near my desk, I had to find another solution.
I had some extra fans lying around from a previous build and after some mockups (being a cardboard server lid with a fan taped to it), I had the best results with:
A be quiet! 140mm shadow wings 2 with the fan placed on top of CPU (and M2). Coolest result was with the fan sucking air out of the case.
I’m afraid my warranty is void, especially for the case itself 🙂 And stacking another supermicro on top will not be possible anymore.
But the server is now completely silent! no load CPU temp is around 37°C. I ran a 30 minute test having at 100% CPU and CPU temp never went above 66°C.
I constantly had an alarm on the MB, saying that the fan was failing, this is because the “Be Quiet!’ fans run at low speeds. So when you use these low speed fans, you will have to lower the alarm threshold for the fans. First I removed the fan tray with the 2 front fan’s
I 3D-printed a base for the fan. This base would also be used to draw where I had to saw out the hole for the fan (bye bye warranty).
Next, I masked the lid and drill holes to fix the printed base. I then marked the in- and outside of the base with a pen. I didn’t take pictures of grinding the out the hole with my dremel…I can just say it’s stressy and those server cases are a lot harder than you’d think :-).
Attached the fan to the lid, plugged in the fan on the motherboard and ready for testing!
Stress test at 100% CPU for 30 minutes:
After the test, temp dropped quickly to 37 °C

Next up will be an outside case for some SSD’s since I lost the inside tray for the SSD. Keep you posted!
